Title: CA02, Physics, Bachelor of Applied Science
Institution: Central Queensland University, Australia

Level:

Degree.

Description:
Physics is concerned with the understanding and quantitative
description of natural phenomena. Applied physics is concerned with the application of this knowledge for the advancement of society. The areas in which professional physicists are employed are changing rapidly and becoming increasingly cross-disciplinary: biophysics, medical physics, environmental science, instrumentation, data
acquisition and processing.

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Physics) course is designed to produce graduates who are well qualified to succeed in the changing employment scene. Graduates have readily found employment in fields as diverse as acoustics consulting, biophysics research, technical sales, computing technology, geophysical exploration, and secondary teaching.

The course includes in-depth studies in physics, including subjects that introduce students to problems and applications in research and industry, as well as individual research projects of an applied nature in which students solve real problems and compile evidence of
practical competence to show prospective employers.

Typical course structure for external degree students: new students 1995 or later:
Year 1:
Semester 1:
81118 Physics 1A
84151 Mathematics 1A

Semester 2:
81119 Physics 1B
84152 Mathematics 1B

Year 2:
Semester 1:
85101 Programming A
Elective, for example
81117 Digital Electronics and Microprocessors 1 or
80110 Environmental Science A or
83100 Chemistry 1 or
81229 Geological Science

Semester 2:
85102 Programming B

81215 Digital and Microprocessor Based Systems Design or
80120 Environmental Science B or
83100 Chemistry I or
81120 Fundamentals of Computer Technology (Hardware) or
81228 Geology - Interior Processes.

Entrance qualifications: Normal entry is through Queensland Senior Certificate studies (or equivalent) with an appropriate Student Education Profile. Special Entry for mature age persons who do not qualify for normal entry is based on demonstrated evidence of
experience, maturity and motivation. A senior level knowledge of physics and mathematics is anticipated.

Languages:

English

Media and methods employed: Printed text, face-to-face tutorials, study centres, residential schools.
Printed correspondence texts prepared by/for institution, teleconferencing, study centres, face-to-face tutoring, laboratory work, residential school.

Administrative information:
The Bachelor of Applied Science (Physics) can be completed in 6 years by external study. Students must complete the necessary laboratory work during the June and September school holidays. The external and internal versions of the course have identical content, and students can transfer from one mode to the other as circumstances dictate.
Graduates are eligible for graduate status in the Australian Institute of Physics.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science (Physics) who demonstrate outstanding performance may apply for entry into the Honours Degree programme. Graduates from other institutions are welcome to apply for admission to this course.
